Atlanta United 2 delivered one of its most complete performances of the young MLS NEXT Pro season Saturday, pressing Chicago Fire FC II into submission and walking away with a 3-0 victory at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview. The win pushed ATL UTD 2 to 4-2-1 on the season, good for 13 points, and gave the back line a second consecutive clean sheet.
The story of this match was defensive aggression. ATL UTD 2 did not sit back and absorb pressure. They hunted the ball all over the field, suffocated Chicago's build-up from the opening minutes, and made Owen Pratt's distribution a liability rather than an asset. When Chicago had the ball, Atlanta made them uncomfortable. When Atlanta won it back, they moved with purpose.
The Press Pays Off in the Fourth Minute

The opening goal was a direct product of that defensive philosophy. Arif Kovac tracked Pratt all the way to the top of the eighteen, forced him into a rushed clearance, and poked the ball off the keeper's foot and into the net. It was not a lucky break. It was the system working exactly as designed, and Kovac, in his second professional start, has now scored in back-to-back matches.
Dominik Chong Qui was the engine of that pressure on the left side all night. He defended all the way up and down the flank, connected on the left in attack, and earned Man of the Match with an outstanding tackle in stoppage time to preserve the clean sheet. This was a performance that will be remembered as a breakout moment for the young wing back.
Second Goal, Same Story
Cameron Dunbar had an earlier close-range chance saved by Pratt in the 27th minute, but he made no mistake in the 36th. Another Atlanta press forced a turnover, Ignacio Suarez-Couri played a quick one-touch pass into Dunbar's path, and Dunbar buried a right-footed shot into the bottom-right corner. It was Suarez-Couri's first professional assist, and it will not be his last. His two assists on the night were the first of his career. Atlanta went into halftime outshooting Chicago 11-8, with four shots on target to one, holding Chicago to 74 percent passing accuracy under relentless pressure.
Ilan Ettinger came close to adding a second before the break. His header from a set piece struck the crossbar in the 28th minute. The score could have been more comfortable even earlier.
Matthew Senanou also deserves mention. A huge defensive block late in the match kept Chicago off the board when the visitors had their best spell of the game.
A Statement from Gill

The second half was more measured. Chicago created a handful of chances, including a Damian Nigg effort that curled inches wide and a Jack Sandmeyer strike that crashed off the post in the final minutes. Jonathan Ransom made one significant save to maintain the clean sheet, his first of the season.
Adrian Gill ended any doubt in the 84th minute. He collected a backward pass from Suarez-Couri on the edge of the box, measured a strike from 30-plus yards, and watched it fly into the bottom left corner. It was his first goal for ATL UTD 2, and it was a statement. The kind of finish that changes how a player feels about himself.
The Bigger Picture
Two consecutive clean sheets. Back-to-back goals from Kovac and Dunbar. First career assists for Suarez-Couri. A breakout performance from Chong Qui. This was not just a result. It was a glimpse of what ATL UTD 2 can be when the press clicks and young players play with confidence.
Atlanta United 2 returns to action Saturday, May 2, traveling to North Carolina to face Carolina Core FC at Truist Point Stadium. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. ET and you can find the coverage on MLSNEXTPro.com and the OneFootball app.
