CF Montreal take 3 points at Stade Saputo from Atlanta United

Atlanta United’s losing streak continues as CF Montreal takes the 1-0 victory at Stade Saputo.

In the first 45 minutes, Montreal had most of the control, but neither team could find the back of the net. Montreal had 8 shots in the first half, and thanks to Brad Guzan who made three saves in the half to keep the match scoreless.

Atlanta started the second half strongly, but CF Montreal would make it 1-0 in the 51st minute as Raheem Edwards made a cross from the far post to connect with Ruan who headed the ball past Guzan.

“It comes from a giveaway from our own mistake as we’re on the counter. At that point you just have to put out fires, especially in transition moments. You have two players there and one of theirs and we didn’t deal with it,” said interim head coach Rob Valentino when asked about Montreal’s goal. “Whether it’s naive or just that, what we talked about before the game, concentration and execution, that’s a moment where there was a lack of concentration and execution.”

Only two minutes later, Stian Gregersen was given a second yellow card, and was sent off. The defender will miss Wednesday's match against NYCFC. Atlanta United would go on to play the rest of the match with 10 men.

Guzan was able to keep the score line to 1-0 after he made six saves in the match. He stopped Josef Martinez after he tried a shot from the edge of the six-yard box in the 75th minute. In the 80th minute, he denied Jules Anthony Vilsain for finding the back of the net, and tipped a powerful strike from Mason Toye over the crossbar in the 88th minute.

“Everyone is definitely really disappointed, myself included. I think it’s really frustrating when you know, especially in the first half, the game was a bit stale, there honestly wasn’t too much going on from both sides,” said Noah Cobb. “They had more of the ball but they weren’t doing a whole lot with it. Hand up on the goal for me, I played the bad pass that got intercepted. One lapse in concentration and goal.”

Atlanta United will look to break this four game losing streak on Wednesday, July 17 as they host New York City FC at Mercedes Benz Stadium.
